Am I that desperate to sell paintings?

I sometimes wonder, "how desperate am I to sell paintings?" I've come across plenty of people who really like my artwork and then at some point they want to make some purchases. So we get to talking about how much a painting is and then they say, "well, can I have a discount off that price?"  and I'm not talking just 10 percent maybe but they want 20 and 30 percent off and keep in mind they have never purchased from me before ( usually I give about %10 off my customer's second purchase)  Now I understand that buying art can be pretty pricey, but what do you expect when you are buying an original painting not a print.  There are many people who don't know much about art, but begin to learn more about it when they become art collectors and you have the art collectors who already know how pricey a painting can be but yet are willing to pay for it.  If my prices are in a decent range and not off the wall, then I don't feel the need to have to keep explaining myself to every person who questions my prices and doesn't want to pay for the work I do.  I have already been there and done that, I mean I literally gave paintings away at cost the first year I started painting, then said to myself, "Why did I do that?"  but I didn't know any better.

So the answer is no, I'm not that desperate to sell any painting if it will cause any regret in doing so.  Besides don't we have to respect our work as an artist?  If I don't take it seriously why should they.  I think in the end if you say no to the discount they will respect you and your work more.

Any opinions?
